A Roundup of Stuff We're Digging Right Now (In Life & Business)
Episode 192: Show Notes
Today on the show we are sharing all the things that we are digging right now. Things that we love, things that bring us happiness, things that make our lives easier, things that are guilty pleasures and everything in between. From handmade clogs from Sweden, to crime thrillers, to kombucha and shipping hacks – this is just a fun little break between all the hardcore business bootcamping and emotional trail runs that we have just about almost every other episode!
Today we are diving into the most marvelously random list: some are products, some are services, some are just things that we like to do – minus the sponsors or affiliates! These are things we are recommending because we genuinely enjoy them. We are sharing ten things each, so a total of twenty, epic random things we are just digging! We hope you’ll find them interesting or inspiring, entertaining or insightful. We hope that you try some of them and hopefully dig them too. Take a listen and let us know if you do!
Welcome To Our Second Life of Essential Oils: Our Greasiest Dig
Abby is super into her essential oils right now. She has been using them for years now for pain, discomfort, skincare... everything! And now she is using them for more “woo-woo” stuff, like emotional support. This is something both of us use in almost every aspect of our lives, all day every day. We are obsessed, have seen profound results (and have dedicated many a podcast episodes to this topic). So we invite you to join our essential oils community at simplyhomeKC.com/community, ask us questions and get to know the greasy side of our lives.
Audible and Claiming Your Power: Things We’re Digging In Literature
For a while Emylee kind of thought that Audible was frivolous. It is $14 p/m after the free trial which is not exactly that cheap! But she got it anyway to help her get back into the habit of reading. Since Emylee was into podcasts because they were easier to consume in the car, while making dinner and general multi-tasking etc, she decided to make a compromise and get Audible as it’s pretty much the audio version of a book. She did the free trial, got a free book and is now listening to a true crime thriller about the Golden State killer. Gripping! Abbie recently got an actual book that she is into and it’s called Claim Your Power: A 40 Day Journey To Resolve The Hidden Blocks That Keep You Stuck And Finally Thrive In Your Life’s Unique Purpose. The book is divided into days and has journal prompts to help you think and reflect on your life. It’s been quite a journey already and we’ll have multiple episodes coming soon about that. So stay tuned.
Getting Fit and Hello Fresh: Things We’re Digging On The Health Front
Emylee is turning thirty soon and is having a few minor mental breakdowns about that! One of her goals was to get fit and healthy and she started with a class workout that nearly killed her. It was hardcore. Yup, she threw up and was in pain for two weeks. Jumping is not a good fit for her as it turned out and so she decided to find a workout that wouldn’t leave her tormented and partially paralyzed. She and her mom both tried bell therapy and fell in love with it. Abbie’s health related dig is Hello Fresh – a subscription box for weekly meal planning. All of the ingredients come, pre-packaged and measured and the only thing you have to provide yourself with is pretty much the olive oil and a little salt and pepper. Everything else is included and they give you the recipe. She has tried other boxes and has been disappointed. She likes the portion control, the inspiration to try new things and also that they keep it simple with the recipes.
Ring a Ding Ding and Closet Consultations: Things We’re Digging in Fashion
Emylee has ring issues. Either she is taking them all off, losing them, or just feeling naked without them! So she has been looking around for a plain, simple, gold band that doesn’t look old. Which is actually pretty difficult. She just happened to be in a cute shop in Kansas City and they had these little thin gold bands that were custom made. She had to order one and the company is called Genuine and Gender, based out of New Mexico. Everything is handmade, made from order and simplicity and modern is their jam. They are for women and do a lot of good. They are affordable and Emylee loves them! She can sleep in them, workout in them paint in them. Big fan.
Abbie’s next dig is an activity. Abbie has a friend who is a fashion stylist and who does closet consultations. She will meet with you, open your closet, throw out what you don’t wear and reorganize your closet so that it’s a more logical set up and then help you create outfits from the stuff you already have. If you want to take it a step further, she can then do personal shopping with you, bring you clothes or curate what you’re missing from your closet. So this friend came over, threw out 75 of Abbie’s pieces and reorganized her closet in a way that is just the best version of her! The cool part is that she can do this not only in Kansas City, but virtually too. You can follow her on Instagram at: @caitfore.
Kambucha and Laptop Pace: Things We’re Just Digging This Season
Emylee is loving the current workflow at TCC. We are at laptop pace, not desktop pace. Meaning, we have not cemented ourselves to our workspace and are just hustle, hustle, hustle. We’re in the season of working from our laptops outside or in coffee shops. And we’re both loving it. Abbie on the other hand is really digging kombucha. The first time she had kombucha she thought it was disgusting. But since she has been on a journey to be caffeine and Coca Cola free, she needed something that wasn’t water but that was healthy. She grew to love kombucha because it’s super low calorie and super good for your gut. She has three brands that she is a fan of: Mamma Chia, Synergy and Health Aid. Try it.
Fake Cactus Tricks and Beagles: Things We’re Digging On The Domestics
Emylee recently scored the best fake cactus she’s ever seen. She tricked three people into believing it was real, including her mom. Unfortunately, she doesn’t think there are any more available. It was seasonal and she just happened to be at IKEA with her girlfriend. Luck of the draw. She saw it, zoned in on it and bought it for $49.99. Now it just needs a name... Abbie On the other hand is digging live household features and is all about her beagles at the moment. She loves being a beagle mom and has big dreams for her babies (whom you can see all over Instagram).
Handmade Clogs and Financial Peace: Things We’re Digging From Stockholm and God
Emylee just recently snagged an amazing pair of handmade Swedish clogs from Lotte in Stockholm. You can order them online and if you don’t think you want a pair, you’ll change your mind when you see them. They have camel ones and even leopard print ones and they are just so cool even when worn out of Sweden. Then to top it off, a couple weeks ago she was at Old Navy and saw baby clogs. She got a pair for Penny and they wore them together and took a picture of their feet. Precious. Abbie and her husband decided to lead a financial peace university at their church. Money has been the biggest contention in Abbie’s marriage and so they decided to start going through it. And it has given them a lot of opportunities to converse in a way that doesn’t end in a fight. The teachings are really good! And you can find it online and join a community. Highly recommended (even if you don’t believe in Church, God or marriage.)
Creativity Unleashed and Quick Shipping: Things We’re Digging For Our Time
Emylee just recently enrolled in an online course called Creativity Unleashed and it’s for her art hustle and creative brain. The program is designed by an artist that Emylee follows on Instagram and it’s about helping people trust their intuition more in their creative processes. It’s a small accountability group, with lessons, a bit of journaling and practicing new techniques. Abbie sends a lot of happy mail to her oily tribe and was getting frustrated with going to the post office. So she invested in a Dynamo label writer for Exel and it does shipping labels. It’s compatible with Etsy and Ship Station and a few other shipping platforms. But she actually also creates her own labels through PayPal which is even cheaper than going to the post office! She has loved it and it’s so much faster.
Amalah Necklaces and Movies: Things We’re Digging With Our Family
Emylee and her mom went to a rock and gem show last weekend where they saw every type of stone you can imagine! Emylee’s mom is starting a new Amalah necklace range, for grounding, healing and meditation. Her mom picked out a bunch of beautiful gemstones to use in her new line and this got Emylee thinking, wouldn’t it be amazing to paint a fluid series using the colors of her gemstones? So they are now doing a mini collaboration of necklaces and translated paintings and pairing them up and selling them together. They have paired four of them already and can’t wait to get them up and sell them online. Abbie and her husband decided to prioritize entertainment in their lives. So they have gone to two or three movies in the past month and Abbie is obsessed. They watched Black Panther, A Wrinkle in Time, and The Greatest Showmen. She has loved it because it reminds her of being a kid where her and her family would go and see a movie every Friday (before they went broke).
Mexico Friends and Bolster’s: Weird Things We’re Digging
Emylee’s next thing is “Friends who say yes to going to Mexico with you two years in a row.” She went to Mexico for her honeymoon to a secret adult resort called Secrets Silversand. It’s amazing, all inclusive, affordable and they wanted to go back for their five-year. Long story short, but their friends have ended up coming with them on our honeymoons and anniversaries (third wheeling much), so they invited them to come along again this year and guess what? They said yes! (Which is not weird at all). Abbie doesn’t shop much so she says but has started shopping from her phone and is actually enjoying it. She just bought a shirt from this blogger that says “Girl. Period.” She is obsessed with this shirt. In other news, she also bought a bolster on Amazon for her knees (which is not weird at all either).
Social Security Cards and Digging Your Daughter.
Emylee’s top dig is that they finally got their daughter’s social security card back with her name on it. They have waited for over a year and it finally came in the mail and Emylee burst out crying. It was a cherry on the top of the process they’ve been going through. So this is the end of our list and the truth is Penelope is on top of it all!
We hope you’ve enjoyed this list as much as we enjoyed putting it together. Let us know if you find yourself a fake cactus, invest in some clogs, get addicted to audio crime thriller or want to meet up with us in Mexico for your anniversary too. Here’s to staying oily!
