The Difference Between Health-Care and Self-Care as a Business Owner with Megan Reed Part 1
Episode 594: Show Notes
Our guest today, Megan Reed, is one of our new client success coaches inside the Incubator. She works alongside our clients to really uncover some of the mindset work that's necessary to take you to the next level. Her background in design makes her a really valuable player. Today we’re going to be talking about the beliefs that you have about yourselves, and some things you need to be working through.
We don’t often tackle the topic of mindset on this show, or with our clients, because that isn’t our field of expertise. So we decided to bring someone on who really knows what she’s talking about. The reason why we wanted to cover this topic is because of the responses that we received to a question we asked on our Incubator intake forms. “How do you like to treat yourselves?” was the question, and the answers basically ranged from, “I don’t know,” to “I don’t treat myself.”
Self-Care Isn’t Selfish
As women in society, we are taught that we are supposed to be nurturers and caretakers. Even if you feel like that’s not who you are deep down, so many women take on this role at such a young age that it’s hard to imagine not doing it. And often it comes at the expense of your own wellbeing. The important thing to remember is that you don’t have to give up your identity as a loving, empathetic, compassionate caregiver in order to practice self-care. You can care for others and prioritize yourself at the same time. Prioritizing yourself does not mean being selfish. In fact, filling your cup is essential if you are going to be able to care for others and run your business the best way you can.
The 3 Buckets Of "Care" That Everyone Needs To Fill Up In Order To Thrive
The 3 care buckets that we have identified are health-care, self-care and treating yourself. Health-care relates to meeting your basic human needs, and it is non-negotiable, like making sure you are looking after your personal hygiene for example. Self-care is all about mindset, and it looks different for everyone. It’s about what lights you up, what gives you energy, what grounds you. And it doesn’t have to cost you anything; it could mean going for a walk everyday, or dancing to your favorite music. You need to nail down what brings you joy, and then make sure you incorporate that into your life regularly. The third bucket is treating yourself, and it also means different things for different people, but no matter how you treat yourself, you need to be doing it way more than once a year!
The #1 Question To Ask Yourself To Find What Really Gives You Energy and Lights You Up
Self-care comes down to knowing what you like, what you want, who you are, and who you want to become. If you don’t know who you are, you can’t know what to do to fill up your cup. The first step to figuring yourself out is to establish a sense of self-awareness. The thing with self-awareness is that it involves a lot of deep reflecting and question asking. It’s about going back into your past, evaluating your present and looking towards your future. For anyone who is struggling to figure out who they are, Megan has one question that will help get this process started: “Who are you when nobody else is around?” She encourages all of us to think about what we would actually do for fun if money wasn’t an issue and you didn’t care what anybody else thought of you. Learning about yourself can be a very uncomfortable process, but being uncomfortable is the only way to grow.
How Mastering Self-Care Grows Your Confidence As A Business Owner
Life is a learning journey for everyone, and you shouldn’t feel inadequate if you don’t get things right the first time, or the second time, or even the twentieth time. Nobody has everything completely figured out, and you can keep growing your entire life, and changing your priorities as you go. Megan has learned to become comfortable with the fact that she is constantly evolving, and that self-awareness has given her so much confidence. The cool thing about confidence is that it is a state of mind that you can cultivate, as opposed to an inherent talent that you are born with, and everyone has the ability to access it!
Quote This
Self-care is crucial and there is nothing selfish about taking care of yourself. If you cannot take care of yourself, how do you expect to take care of others, or show up for your business, or do anything if your cup is empty?
