Emylee the Romance Author

If you’ve been wanting to dip your toes into reading the romance genre, now is your chance! While we’re sad to say goodbye to Emylee in her role as Co-CEO of Boss Project, we are thrilled to say hello to Emylee, the Romance Author! Many authors feel compelled to write because of what they feel is missing in literature. That is a big part of what has motivated Emylee in her journey as a romance writer. She tells us about her love of romance novels, what she feels is missing in the genre, and why she is excited to carve out a niche novel that is light-hearted, humourous, kind, and of course, super sexy! Hear Emylee’s breakdown of the type of characters she wants to create, how Kindle Vella helped her gain confidence, and what she hopes readers will take from her books.

Overcoming the Obstacles

When you’re a writer, momentum and flow are essential. Unfortunately, a lot of things can get in the way of that flow, chief among which is your job. And every time you are forced to take a break, it’s that much more difficult to get back into the swing of things. While it took a huge leap of faith, leaving her job here at Boss Project has helped Emylee overcome one of her biggest obstacles. Taking that important step has allowed her to create space and flexibility in her schedule, providing her with the space she needs to maintain momentum and consistently pursue her writing.

Accountability, Partnerships, and Going Solo

Building Boss Project has been a massive part of both of our lives. Our partnership has taught us so much, both about ourselves and business. For Emylee, external motivation is really important, and she is someone who derives a ton of benefit from having deadlines. Having external feedback, support, and a sounding board is of huge value to her. We chat about Emylee’s transition from being in a partnership to going solo and how she is using the skills she’s learned over the last eight years to set up new systems so that she can mimic accountability now that she no longer has Abagail as her partner. If you could use some accountability and guidance in your business, too, check out some of the ways our team could support you!

The Writing Process

In the romance business, quantity is your friend. Emylee shares some of her goals as a romance author and how she plans to write three to four books in the next calendar year! She unpacks how she is getting into a groove and figuring out her style, plus what it’s been like getting to grips with what full-time authorship looks like. We then take a closer look at self-publishing and the expenses involved, along with what it means to set yourself up for success down the line. Emylee also provides insight into her writing process and what she is finding most challenging.

Contemplating a Career Change?

We can always find reasons to put off any major changes in our lives, whether it’s moving to a different town, starting a family, or undergoing a dramatic career shift. But sometimes you just need to take the step, even if you don’t feel ready (or else you may never do it). Emylee shares her thoughts on the rapid pace at which her career shift has taken place, why she sometimes wishes it had happened more gradually, and why there are times when you just need to do the scary thing and get through the difficult season! There is so much power in learning to trust yourself and having confidence in the fact that you are creating something new and incredible and different. Emylee could have held onto her full-time position forever, but the rapidity with which things happened helped her gain momentum and take the leap she needed to make a beautiful, major change.

Dealing with Uncertainties and Fears

It’s normal to have fears and doubts about your career choices (and your capabilities). But these can become overwhelming when you’re doing something completely new and embarking on an entirely different path. That’s why it’s so important to have people in your corner who can help you get out of your head when you need it most. Emylee shares how her parents gifted her with a powerful ego, the ways in which this has helped her, and how her husband’s unwavering support provides her with belief when she doesn’t have any herself. Uncertainty, fear, and doubt may be part of the process, but it shouldn't cloud everything you do. After all, it’s possible to be nervous, scared, excited, and hopeful all at the same time!

What’s a daring, brave step you’d like to take in your own business? We’d love to hear about it— book a time to chat about it with Abagail here!
