Explosive Growth: Exactly How I Increased Podcast Downloads by 43% and 12x NEW Subscribers in 30-Days
Episode 778: Show Notes
I’ve dedicated today’s episode to telling you how I increased my downloads by a whopping 43% in just 30 days while multiplying my new subscribers by 12! These are crazy numbers at this scale. This is usually the kind of growth you would see over a year when you already have millions of subscribers. Today I’m sharing what I did differently and how I was able to drive so much more traffic and so many more sign-ups in real-time.
Make Sure Podcasts are Value-Packed
It can be really easy to put off podcast planning. So for the last few weeks, I have been very intentional about spending significantly more time in development before I hit record. I actively outline each episode in great detail, pull together stats, and research new information to pack as much value as possible into every episode. I went back and researched which content listeners were most interested in. I revisited a couple of those topics, specifically the story of how I turned my layoff into completely replacing my cushy corporate salary. When I say I spent a lot of time making sure that I was putting together the best of the best, I really mean it.
Stay Relevant in an Ever-Changing World
Trends are constantly changing. Pop culture is constantly changing. But a podcast, at the end of the day, is media. There is an element of staying super timely in the world of podcasting. The most popular episode that I did in the last 30 days was about the marketing that went into the Barbie movie! But if you’re going to lean into trends, you need to make sure that you do it in a way that is relevant to your audience and doesn’t begin to veer off course. If you really want to include something random, do it elsewhere. An Instagram story is a great place to get a little bit more personal.
Build a Call-to-Action into Every Piece of Content
While this podcast has served as a discovery tool for Boss Project, podcasting is not generally a discovery tool. It’s a nurture tool. So, if you have a nurture channel, you should drive traffic to it from your visibility channel. I’ve taken a different approach; I use two nurture channels to drive traffic to each other. If you don’t actively invite your users to engage with the different things you’re doing, they won’t! That’s why calls to action are essential. You need to produce every piece of content as if it’s for a stranger because you never want someone to feel excluded! Even when I repeat information, I present it as if it’s the first time you’ve ever heard it, with all the context! For the people who have heard it, they might just end up finally taking action.
The Easiest Way to Grow My List & Listeners
This might shock you, but in all these years, we have not sent out one email specific to a podcast. Why would we spend so much time, money, and effort that we aren’t telling our email list about? I’m really excited to start putting out more emails. The email is where you find out where to find the value. That’s all the email is doing. If people want to leave the list because of that, they probably weren’t going to buy from me anyway. So I started writing really short emails direct to podcast, with the exception of a few linked to my promotion schedule. I knew that our list had to grow, so I’ve also focused on organic efforts to increase leads. The easiest way to start that process is to cross these two groups of people; the list, and the listeners. When you create enough buzz around this, you also attract other people around the way.
Three Strategies That Have Helped Me to Grow
I know that I need a bigger audience to create the kind of impact I am looking for. One of the things that’s worked for me in the past is collaboration! This time around, I’m not worried about competition or size, but I would like to recommend that you find a measurable way to track impact so that you can determine whether it's worth it for you to use this method again.
Another thing that’s really worked for me in the past is free and paid bundles. You can choose between paid or free. Paid bundles will generate fewer leads, but they are more likely to produce paid-for sales in the future. This is a great way to introduce yourself and your product to people who don’t necessarily know who you are. I’ve also recently created a chatbot, which had the highest amount of work with the lowest reward.
The Biggest Pivot I’ve Made in the Last 30 Days
There’s one thing I’ve been really reluctant to do, but I’ve finally done it! I have begun to actively teach what I’m learning in real-time, and that has been the thing that has really built my business. It was so fun! The reason I’ve hesitated so fully is that I was worried that the insights I’ve had were not relevant to my audience. I literally changed my model to be more like you guys, working behind the scenes to come alongside the kind of business that the majority were running. The truth is, people are nosy! Even if your journey is irrelevant to listeners, a portion of what you are doing is simply for entertainment.
So much of this comes down to being willing to listen to what people want! I would love to share more of what’s happening with you in real time, and that’s why I want to invite you to join the Co-Op. I’ve shared a ton of details here, and once you opt-in, you’ll get your first free training. You can get all the details on how I went from zero to 724 signups, increased my downloads by 43%, and grew my email list by 12x from the month before once you’ve opted in. See you there!
