Fireside Chat with Sam Altman, Founder of OpenAI & ChatGPT: The Future of AI
Episode 745: Show Notes
What can we expect from the future of AI? How quickly will we be asked to evolve and adapt alongside these changes? Abagail recently had the opportunity to sit in on a fireside chat with Sam Altman, the founder and CEO of OpenAI and ChatGPT. This episode is dedicated to sharing the highlights of what she heard.
Is AI the Best or Worst Thing to Ever Happen to Technology?
Sam Altman famously tweeted that AI would be the best or worst thing to happen to the world. He quickly set the record straight at the conference, letting us know heβs confident about the direction itβs taken since then. So, how will it change the world? Sam predicts that AI will, at minimum, change the speed at which the world operates by making it run faster. Weβll see faster technology shifts than ever before happening right before our eyes!
How Sam Altman Broke All His Own Rules
OpenAI has the fastest-growing user base out of anything ever released. There are no community aspects; thereβs no sharing, thereβs no posting, and in some cases, you donβt even have to register to use it! He admits just how crazy this is. This tells us that Sam would never have expected the virality thatβs come with the launch of ChatGPT. How did this happen? Sam considers himself the founder of a research company, and at the moment, his focus is not on profits. However, an informal audience poll reveals that the paid version (ChatGPT4) is superior to the free one you may have been using.
What AI is at Its Core and What That Means for You
What, ultimately, is AI? At its core, itβs the result of us figuring out systems that can learn. Thatβs whatβs going to be transformative. The first computers had to be programmed to do anything. As things progressed, you could click and then you could type. The point weβre reaching today is the opportunity to interact with technology through language. Language is the easiest way for humans to interact, whether written or spoken. There is so much nuance that can only be communicated with language.
Expectations for the Future of Evolving AI Technology
Sam is interested in multi-modality. That means weβre moving beyond written or spoken communication to visual prompts, and visa versa. Weβll start to see ways to interact with way more file types. The goal of AI is not to give it absolute data, but rather for it to continue to learn. The capacity of technology to identify things in the real world is unbelievable! Imagine what this could mean for the visually impaired.
What We Can Learn From Sam Beyond Technology
Sam talked about flux and movement between teams and roles at his research-based company. He wants to create a company thatβs rooted in loyalty. He also says that running a research group is totally different from anything else heβs done. The only thing thatβs transferred from the business model before, is how to deal with people. He also thinks that no one is honest about how hard the early days of a business can be. He believes we should have global regulatory authorities over AI through an international effort.
