In this episode, we will be discussing the three most commonly made mistakes that prevent a lot of us from reaching our goals. 1) Picking “buy work” goals. 2) Paying your way as the only way and 3) Hiring people to fix what’s broken. We’re going to explain why these things don’t work and what you could do instead. Ultimately, we want you to get to know your business before you add on or distract yourself with ventures that are sure to veer you off course. We’re here to help you skip the hurdles and the mistakes that we’ve already made, so if you’re looking for a faster and more thorough route to your goals – then take a listen to this episode.

Mistake 1: You Are Picking “Busy Work” Goals And We See You!

You are picking “busy work” goals and making them a priority and that is bogging down your day. It’s not moving the needle and it’s not showing you results that actually matter. The goals that you should be setting instead, should be impacting your revenue. (Please do yourself a favor and listen to our episode with Steph Crowder for a reiteration of the sand, pebble, rock metaphor and how this applies to your goal setting!) Busy goals are the things you fill all your time with, but don’t actually get you anywhere substantial and do not make you money directly. Things like admin, answering the phone 24/7, responding to every single email as it comes in, researching hashtags or re-designing your Pinterest graphics.

We recognize that you do need to do these day-to-day things, but what we’re saying is that you need to stop prioritizing them! Those things are constant tasks so we want you to get out of the habit of making busy work a goal. Busy work is not a goal. Researching hashtags is not a goal, for example. Because it does not have a direct impact on your revenue. A revenue-based goal would be developing a specific product, reaching a certain number of members or customers, or increasing your conversion rates. Those are revenue impacting goals. Not little tasks. Another thing that falls into busy work, is when two of you do the same thing. For so long we would be working on the same tasks, wasting so much time. Delegate one person to one task / project and another person to another task / project and report back to each other. Trust us, you will save so much time!

Mistake 2: You Are Thinking That The Only Way To Grow Is Paying Your Way

We see you out there spending 3k, 5k,10k on branding before you’ve even sold anything! Or you’re spending hundreds of dollars on a business coach before you’ve even tried it yourself! You’re spending money on marketing, ads, extravagant packaging, etc before you’ve even solidified what it is you are even selling. We’re not saying that things like Facebook ads are wrong. We leverage Facebook ads a lot, but in the beginning, we tried to get as much organic growth as possible. Because guess what? Organic growth is free! You can save so much more money and learn so much about your product, your customers, what you like doing, what you’re good at etc by focusing on organic growth in the beginning. A lot of the time we think that if we set up everything – website, Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, email list etc – that it will be easier to get customers. But that’s just not the way that it works most of the time! You only know if you are on point, until you start knocking on doors. You might look at another business and think, “They were an instant success.”

The truth is, you don’t know how many different things they tried in order to get to that point. You just don’t know people’s paths. We’re not saying you can’t pay to grow, but we don’t want you to use this as your only option before you learn the systems, get the basics down and explore how this works for you before you even explore the idea of selling to the masses. As soon as you start paying for something, you expect it to keep working in the same way that it’s been working. But then something always changes. Either it’s the algorithm, or your audience, or your product, or it’s that you converted your dreamies already and you just have to try a different technique. You can’t just repeat the same old strategies over and over again, you have to put your business brain on and adapt, tweak and cut! It makes business owners comfortable when you’re paying for growth. So much so, that they stop learning or they don’t learn anything at all.

Mistake 3: You Are Hiring People To Fix What’s Broken In Your Business

You do this on small scales and on big scales, all the time. We just recently did this on a pretty big scale too resulting in a $15,000 dollar mistake! You think, “Oh I’ll just hire a VA to run my social media strategy,” when you don’t actually know how to run it yourself! When you don’t know how it works or how it is converting. Even if these people have great skills and talents, if you are lacking the processes and the knowledge as to what it is even bringing to your table, you don’t even know how to value it. Bringing in the cheapest option is generally not the best idea. We want you to have a game plan and the knowledge of what your strategies are going to bring into your business, before you hire someone to help you or take control of it. For example, you could be paying for a social media manager when maybe social media is not at all what you should be focusing on! Meaning, you’re just wasting money. We’re not saying that hiring is a mistake. We are just saying that you need to know the ins and out of your business before you just hire someone to magically fix your problems. The truth is, we want to help you reach your goals and we want to help you skip these mistakes! We want to know your business and see how we can help you and you can let us in if you join the Goal Crusher Club.
