How to Actually Build a Regret-Free Business
Episode 690: Show Notes
We’ve been working with our clients behind the scenes and noticing some commitment issues when it comes to setting goals and deciding on how to reach them. On some level, the hesitation stems from perfectionism and feelings of Imposter Syndrome. But there’s more to it than that. Today we want to talk about an article that we read recently which delves into the things that we’ve been talking about for years, but from a different angle. Ultimately, perfectionism, Imposter Syndrome and all the related feelings come from a place of worrying about making the wrong decisions. So, we’re going to unpack the principles of creating a regret-free business and life!
Stop Looking For A Path Without Tradeoffs
One of our previous episodes was about consequences and the fact that consequences in and of themselves aren’t bad. The article talked about the fact that we are constantly seeking opportunities that have a lot of potential reward and little to no potential risk. But guess what? If you only seek out things that have high reward and low risk, you’ll miss out on a lot of opportunities that are much better aligned with what you actually want and need in your life. We understand the temptation to try and take the path of least resistance, but keep in mind that most things that are worth having in life will be challenging and require some sacrifice. So, rather than trying to avoid the tradeoffs, make peace with them instead!
Don’t Be Afraid To Restart
There’s no such thing as happily ever after; in the real world, we are constantly restarting life. Setting a goal once isn’t enough. It is so important to reevaluate your goals as you progress along your journey to make sure that they are still relevant and still aligned with the season of life you are in. For example, we had a season where we decided to intentionally not grow our business; we reduced the number of hours that we were working and took time to energize ourselves in other ways. After a certain amount of time, we came back feeling inspired and ready to grow again.
Society places a lot of pressure on us to chase happiness and passion. But we think that finding contentment in our current circumstances is a far more fulfilling approach. When we stopped seeking the highs and rather chose to focus on the things that actually matter, we found ourselves enjoying everything so much more.
The Value of Small Questions
We’ve all had people all ask questions like, “Where do you want your business to be in five years?” and “How do you want to impact the world?” You’re not alone if you find these questions very hard to answer. In fact, finding those answers can take years or even decades! So, rather than overwhelming yourself with big questions, ask smaller questions instead. For example, “Who is my ideal customer?” “Can we afford this?” “Where did we go wrong?” These may seem like trivial questions in relation to the bigger picture, but they can make enormous impacts on the end result!
Making Life-First Decisions
There are going to be times in your life when everything feels too complicated. It's important to know how you personally react to being overloaded and the coping strategies that will prevent you from reaching the stage of total burnout. Challenges are an inevitable part of life and you can’t control everything that happens to you. The one thing you can always control is how you react to everything that happens to you. You can always make decisions that bring you back into alignment, and we are here to help you do just that!
