How We Think AI Will Impact Our Industry in The Coming Years

Episode 709: Show Notes

Recent developments in the AI space are undoubtedly going to change our world. The most significant shift is the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT which can create any content according to refined prompts. OpenAI has multiple other bots that utilize different databases, but ChatGPT is the one that got the most press and is publicly setting the precedent for what’s to come. We don’t believe that AI will take jobs immediately, but that it absolutely will in the long term. In this episode, we look at the impact of AI in the near future versus the long-term future, its implications and benefits, and the evolution of job creation in the new world!

The Potential Implications and Benefits of AI

When iPhones came out, many were averse to technological progress. Regarding AI, we feel it’s important to be open, but appropriately wary. For AI to be beneficial, everyone needs to be on board in terms of legislation, so it can be truly helpful in the appropriate areas, instead of simply replacing the human aspect. While AI has the potential to replace jobs, it is equally as capable of opening up opportunities for new jobs to be created. If made accessible to all, it will change our world and allow more room for creative problem-solving, with less focus on task delivery. That being said, the advent of ChatGPT has major implications for many industries, particularly for creatives, and will put many people’s jobs in jeopardy.

Predicting the Future of AI

There are various ways in which AI is going to change the world. It’s predicted to trump humans’ ability to translate languages by 2024, write essays by 2026, sell goods by 2031, write a bestselling book by 2049, and conduct surgeries by 2053. When digital photography was introduced, there was much talk about how it would take the art out of photography, yet the skills did translate to the digital space, and more jobs were created in the process. With AI, there is major potential for a revolution! We predict that, in the near future, careers are going to shift and more value is going to be placed on things done by hand, as opposed to desk jobs. AI will also revolutionize the brainstorming and early concept phase of new ideas. A few things that are already happening but are predicted to be more commonplace are facial recognition, product delivery via drone, and AI-based virtual assistants. In the realm of healthcare, plans for the future involve bots even performing surgeries with human surgeons supervising! We believe this should be introduced slowly, but it could drastically improve the problems we have with the healthcare system.

Is AI Coming For Our Jobs?

Many fear potential job loss, but what can’t be ignored is the ability of AI to accelerate your processes. Additionally, with AI automating work, a more comfortable future can be created for humans and, instead of being displaced, new jobs can be created. On a more practical level, countless jobs have already been created in the AI space and there is actually a talent shortage of AI engineers. By 2030, AI will outperform humans in most mental tasks, but humanity will adapt and evolve as we have done with every other revolution in history. It is very likely that we will have to reinvent our careers multiple times over the course of our working lives, which is an admittedly intimidating idea, but this will take time due to the multitude of factors limiting the advancement of AI technology.

Our Concerns Surrounding the Advent of AI

We have a few concerns about how the advent of AI plays out, the first being the question of accessibility and getting reliable internet to places that need it. Attention also needs to be paid to the role of bias in technology. Most modern structures are based on biases and a counter needs to be created in tech. With AI comes the potential to create more falsified information. Misinformation can be widely spread by bots, thus creativity and play need to be promoted, rather than fact-finding. Then there is, of course, the issue of copyright; as we’re dealing with learning models, whose intellectual property is it? 2023 is undoubtedly going to see the biggest shift in online creative work yet!
