Investing in Your Dream

Episode 804: Show Notes

This year has absolutely flown by — it’s actually difficult to grasp just how quickly the days and months have simply come and gone! As we approach the end of the year, it’s natural to reflect on what we truly want and where we would like to go next; to figure out what our plans and aspirations could potentially look like.

In that spirit, I want to use today’s conversation to dig into what it looks like to invest in your dream and the things you truly want to pursue. How do you make that happen when there's still so much on your plate, so many areas of your life pulling at you, not to mention the finances required to keep things running? Join me today as I explore what it means to strike that balance and invest in your passion. Because I truly believe your dreams are more available to you than you realize. It’s just about taking the necessary steps to get on the right path!

Identifying Your Dream

Before we can get into how to achieve your dream, we need to unpack how to identify your dream. A lot of us have so many ideas that we want to pursue, that it can be difficult to hone in on what we truly want. This often requires us to take a moment and consider the bigger picture and what direction we want to go in. Allow your ideas to simmer, and imagine what they could look like. Ask yourself, “How do I want to show up? How do I want to get there? What am I willing to do (or not do) to reach my goals?”

You also need to ask yourself if it’s really your dream, or whether you’re just seeing someone else achieve what you think you want. You need to honestly ask yourself whether you actually want what they have. Do your best to take all of the circumstances into account. Not just the good stuff, but the mundane and difficult stuff too. Now ask yourself whether you just want some aspect of it, or if you’re prepared to take on all of it as a whole.

Aligning Your Dreams With Your Values

One thing that really helps me gain clarity and direction in my pursuits is aligning my aspirations, goals, or ideas with my values. If my pursuits fall outside my value system, I might manage it for a short while, but sooner or later, I'll either give up, burn out or feel so terrible that continuing becomes impossible.

Maintaining that alignment with my values is crucial for sustained progress. Without it, my intuition, judgment, and gut instincts keep nudging me to halt, again and again. I believe we can turn our dreams into reality without compromising our values.

Sometimes, we assume there's only one way to reach a specific place or achieve a certain level, but that's not always true. We can forge a new path, even if it takes longer. If it aligns with who I am and how I want to be, it's worth the journey. Instead of always seeking shortcuts or ways to jump ahead, we can create a path that resonates with our core values.

Overcoming Financial Hurdles

I don’t know about you, but more often than not, my dreams have been hampered by some sort of financial hurdle. And because we’re pursuing our passion, we want it to be a process of flow and ease. But I believe it’s essential to take stock and be real about the finances required to achieve those dreams. Which is not as difficult as you may think. I’ve found that the more I’m able to fully articulate my financial requirements, the more ease tends to come up for me.

It's perfectly fine if achieving your dream involves money, investment, or finances. Don't let that be a deterrent or something that puts you off! But, it’s important for you to determine the dollar amount you need. Once you have that information, ask yourself “What steps do I need to take to logically get there?” Then, focus on making those pieces fall into place. We often get so fixated on the number, or the fact that we don't have it right now, that we don't allow ourselves to visualize a path forward. Take your financial requirements and ask yourself “How do I work backward from that? What's the reality, and how can I get there?”

You Don’t Need To Have It All Figured Out

There can be a lot of pressure to have a perfect plan in place before you take the leap and follow your dream. But the truth is you don’t need to have it all figured out before you start. I’m not saying you shouldn’t have a good game plan in place, or invest in the planning period, but you don’t need to have an answer to everything at the very beginning. You don’t even necessarily need to know exactly how you’re going to reach your destination. You just need to take that first step and move in the right direction.

Finding Your Community

I am hugely influenced by the people I surround myself with. Being in a room full of people who are especially negative or complain a lot, can put me in a bad headspace, making me believe everyone else is the problem. But when I’m surrounded by go-getters, who are excited and happy to connect, I find myself opening up and being more uplifted and positive. I can’t stress enough the importance of finding a supportive community.

When I started this business, I felt like I was the only one out there. But now, more people are working online, than ever before. It’s been incredible finding that sense of community amongst folks that I resonate with so strongly. There’s a lot you can achieve on your own, but having the right support around you can help you get unstuck and move you forward in ways you could never have done independently!

Sometimes, if you're really struggling to articulate what the dream is, it may be much easier for you to identify what it is that you don't want.
