How to Leverage Where You Are To Get to Where You Want to GO

Episode 770: Show Notes

Today I want to talk about where you’re going; whether you know what that looks like or not. I know that for many of you, you may not even be sure where you want to go, and that’s okay! It’s really easy to overlook the value of your past experiences but you are, in essence, a cumulation of them and they can be so valuable in shaping where you want to go. I know a lot of you may not know the answer and that is okay! It’s not about knowing the answer, it’s about using this as a jumping-off point. Even all the previous jobs you’ve ever had shape the business you have today!

The real question now is how does your past inform where you’re going? These moments and experiences, big or small, can have a huge impact on what you want to do next. So how do we leverage it? It’s important to point out that this is not about speed but rather about pace! That’s why I came up with the PACE method and today, I’m sharing how these facts ultimately help you apply your findings to something that is actually actionable by breaking down PACE.

Understand Your Positioning

The first step is to get a true understanding of your positioning. Where are you at? What are your current life circumstances? How old are you? When do you want to retire? How much time do you have in your day-to-day life? What are your connections? What kind of money do you need to maintain the lifestyle that you have? These are all really important questions to ask yourself because they are ultimately the unique factors that make up the position you are currently in, and you have to continue to respect where you currently are to make sure you get to the next phase.

Four Exercises to Define Your Aspirations

You have to have clear definitions of where you want to go and not having an aim can be really hard. Don’t get me wrong, it does not have to be exact at all and it can also be more of a loose goal than the specific aspirations you had for yourself when you first started. I have four exercises for you to help you figure out what you aspire towards. These exercises will also help you figure out what your priorities are and even help you figure out what you’re taking for granted.

  1. Imagine you’ve waved a magic wand and woken up tomorrow. What is the life you want and what does that look like?

  2. Pretend everything in your life will disappear tomorrow, and then imagine what you’d bring back and miss when you go and rebuild your life.

  3. What legacy or lessons you hope to pass down?

  4. What makes you angry or frustrated?

Often if you can figure out what you don’t want, what you do want starts to become very clear! Lastly, I think it is very important that you write down your non-negotiables at the end of these exercises. You need to have a set of rules regarding the things you do not want to do to reach your goals. It’s just as important as knowing what you are willing to do!

How Experimenting Boosts Creativity

You are the most creative people I have ever met in my life and that creativity is essential. But I think in order to be creative, it’s really important to be willing to experiment and to think about everything that you do as a hypothesis that you can test. Ultimately, doing things in that way allows you to be creative and to embrace that mindset. Having this mindset encourages innovation, adaptability, and resilience. I really want you to think of examples of how you’ve been willing to experiment and what you would’ve missed out on if you hadn’t.

Execution: Take Messy Action

The last part of PACE is ultimately execution. Sitting on all of this information is not going to get you anywhere! You have to take messy action. It will lead you to progress and growth and take the uncertainty out of where you’re going because to get somewhere, movement is implied! Going somewhere is part of the plan and that movement towards the goal requires action. Thinking about movement/action as change can actually cause you to get stuck. I want you to stop thinking about your happiness as being on the other side of success because spoiler alert, the journey is the destination! I want you to take action like you already have what you want. Obviously, don’t make irreversible financial decisions that are going to bankrupt you. So, definitely be smart about it while acting like the person you want to become because you are closer to being that person than you realize!

Three Actionable Mindset Steps

I know you must be wondering how to even start executing all of these things. It starts with identifying your strengths and your weaknesses! What are the things you’re already amazing at and what do you feel are the challenges in your day-to-day life? I want you to be aware of these things and if you feel like you need some help, I recommend taking a strength finder test to help you untangle your natural strengths from a pragmatic perspective.

The next step is alignment. You have to align your aspirations with your actions and keep your priorities in mind as you figure out what’s next. You have to think about all of these things when you’re figuring out how to take action. It’s not about tackling everything right now but rather, it’s about broad movement. This can be a lot simpler than you think! A helpful way to do this is to imagine what the person you want to be would do on the day-to-day through experimentation and iteration. The goal is not to be perfect but to learn and adapt.

Lastly, you need to take that messy action. This is not about perfection, it’s about progress. It’s really easy to get stuck and make a million excuses not to ‘do the thing.’ First of all, stop it! Turn these excuses into questions to help you solve these problems. Having a positive, abundant mindset really does make this easier but you also need support and advice and the willingness to be adaptable and flexible. I just want you to move in the general direction of your goals because ultimately, your aspirations will change over time! Everything in life can change in an instant so you need to be adaptable and stop being so concerned with getting ‘there.’ Enjoy the present while having direction and viewing challenges as an opportunity. This is how you leverage things for your future!

You are going to need more tangible steps to help you get to where you want to go and that is why I put together The “Untitled” Workshop! Get your ticket today for this special workshop you don’t want to miss!
