Prioritizing Your Life When Shit Hits the Fan
Episode 722: Show Notes
I like to see this time of year as the opportunity to dive back in and come up with a fresh approach to plan for the future! This season can be about refining what you have built so that your business can continue to support you for a long time. I know that many of you use this time to make new goals and create new opportunities, but today I want to talk about what it looks like to prepare your business so that you’re ready when life comes at you again. Shit is going to hit the fan whether you want it to or not and I want you to build a business that can survive that without being so dependent on you. Personally, I never want to be financially dependent on anyone else and I know that many of you feel the same way! You want your business to work even when life gets thrown your way. You aren’t trying to fix the ‘shit,’ you’re trying to live and work while it’s happening!
I do not think enough people understand the reality of the added stress being a business owner brings. The tiniest thing can happen that will completely derail your day or even your life. These things are part of life and will happen whether you have a business or not. So how do we deal with these challenges as they come up and prevent them from completely altering our future success? I know so many of you wish you could wave a magic wand and be at the point in your business where you could rely on it consistently in challenging seasons. And not being there yet is fine! What I want you to do is create a business that allows you to prioritize what you want and that is built to survive if you have to walk away for a while. If you want a business that can handle these things, you’re going to have to make some changes.
Learning How to Ask for Help
The one thing you need right now even more than money is time! You need to create the time to be able to build the business you want. This means that you need a support network and people around you who are building towards what you want. Almost always, it starts at home so that you can eventually make these changes at work. You need to create ease in your life so that you have more time to focus on what you want in your business, and so that you have time to rest when you aren’t working. I want you to think about the top five stressors in your home, and be really specific about this. Communication is imperative. Talk about the importance of building a rock-solid business with the people you love because they want to support you but might just not know how. If we show up in a different way by simply telling them what we need help with and why, more often than not they will try to help! Maybe you aren’t ready to ask for help and that is okay! Don’t be afraid to pay for the help you need until you learn how to ask.
Imagining a Business That Can Run Without You
You can build a business that can run without you, as scary as that may sound. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to completely remove yourself. You can find a way to blend your time and your company’s time. This is dependent on what you want to achieve and what you want to protect yourself against. I want you to get to the point where you can take an afternoon off without having to scramble to get things done all night. I’m not saying that you’ve failed if your business is reliant on you at this point, because this is very common. So many businesses start like this and it takes a process of maturity to get to the point where it’s unshakable without the owner. You know this goal exists so I need you to imagine a world where it exists for you!
There are some clear things you have to focus on in order to achieve these goals. You have to have a productized offer, people who can help deliver, clear definitions of what sits in what department and who handles what tasks, and a strong team that is aware of all these moving parts and can have everyone’s backs. I’m not saying this is going to happen overnight or even before the end of the year. But I want it to be something you’re consciously working towards because it is the difference between your business being sustainable for you and your family, and being a season. I want it to be something that supports you financially, supports your livelihood, and allows you to prioritize your life. And that is only possible if you can imagine that it is, and then take the action necessary to put these things in place.
