The Shift that Doubled Our Business in 4 Months

We have to get creative about how we manage human resources within a completely digital team that is just growing and growing! It’s been the wildest 6 months. You will go through seasons of your business where you are very sure about what you want and what you don’t want, but remember that you have the right to change your mind. What we wanted two years ago is not at all what we want right now, but we’re not mad about it. When you change your mind about something, it’s probably because you have learned more, or have more confidence or more skills in that particular area, and that is nothing to feel bad about! This episode is all about the mindset shift which led us to change something in our business that caused an unprecedented level of growth!  

The Lessons We Learned From Working With Contractors Over the Years  And What Finally Made Us Switch To Employees 

A DM from a listener led to us hiring her as an HR consultant, first for three months, and then for another year. She really showed us what it could look like to have employees, and have it be healthy and feel good and structured and not scary. Contractors can get you really far in your business and they continue to serve us in various important ways in our business, but there is also a great benefit in hiring employees. If you are someone who has been working with contractors for a while and you’re feeling frustrated because you’re still very involved in monitoring a lot of the projects, then you might really benefit from having an employee. Contractors are best for solving very specific problems that you may be having within your business, but what we’ve learned is that when fulfilling your daily operations with employees is the best way to go!  

The Results That Are Possible When You Have the Right Support In Place  

We had the vision, but we didn’t have the time or the support to make it happen. When you have strategic support, all of a sudden your vision can grow and what you can accomplish as a team and as a company will expand so much faster than you ever thought possible. That’s the experience that we had and we couldn’t believe it! In the very short space of four months, we went from 2 to 7 employees; we grew so fast that we had to pump the brakes on our business because it felt like it was going to explode!   

Where We See Boss Project This Time Next Year 

Between July and October we 2x’d the business. Now, we are on track to 5x the business by the end of next year! We’re still trying to comprehend what this means, but what we do know is that we are about to enter into a major hiring season; if everything goes to plan we’re going to go from 7 to around 25 employees within the year. A wish that we have for ourselves is that we can go into our next phase of growth less frazzled than we did during our first growth phase. At the moment, we’re experiencing what it feels like to be fully supported, so what we’re focusing on is growing the business. With the right team, you have the capacity to exponentially grow your business, because you can do what you’re good at, and leave your team members in charge of the rest!  

The Best Things in Life Take Time 

You need to pay attention to what your actual revenue looks like, and when it expands you need to be aware of where that expansion is coming from. Contractors provide you with immediate results, but employees need to be trained and on-boarded and nurtured in order to contribute meaningfully to your business, so the results will not be immediate. In fact, we’ve found that there is likely to be at least a 90 day delay before you see the results from hiring full-time employees. But that’s a game that we now know is very worth playing, because the results have been so worth the wait!
