Group Coaching vs. 1:1 Coaching vs. Done-For-You Service: Which is Right for Your Business?
Episode 616: Show Notes
Something we feel is getting a little bit confused in the realm of being a service provider consultant, learning from other people, hiring contractors, having employees, and serving clients, is the question of how we serve said clients, how we learn, and how we get work done in our own business. The conversation around working one-on-one with people, using done-for-you services, and learning in different aspects by buying books, hiring a coach, or being in a group coaching program, all start to get a little muddy when we’re also service providers in that very business.
We want to clear this up and provide some perspectives and clarification on the buckets we see us providing, our clients providing, our clients hiring for, and really how things can be structured to have purpose within these different containers. Today, specifically, we’re talking about what the heck group coaching is and when it’s actually beneficial, versus one-on-one coaching and done-for-you services, both as a provider and the consumer.
The Existing Buckets Inside Your Own Business and When It Makes Sense To Outsource
If you consider yourself an industry expert, B2B consultant, or service provider serving other businesses, regardless of what the end product is, you have a couple of buckets happening inside your own business. Depending on your specific niche, what you offer is a combination of done-for-you-services and consulting. What we’ve found is that those charging the biggest premiums and getting the best results are those doing a combination of the two! Additionally, if you’re building a business and you have consistent clients, you may still have a couple of straggler contractors that you had when you were getting started. As you scale, the roles can become confusing and you may need to look at restructuring and building a small team of core employees who are responsible for your core services. When it comes to other niche services that you don’t need to perform all the time, you will likely have to work with external subject matter experts (SMEs). Don’t make the mistake of bringing SME-level tasks in-house unnecessarily, or of failing to do so when it’s critical for the growth of your company!
The Critical Role of Thought Leadership
Just because you spent so much time doing and learning everything yourself when you started your business, doesn’t mean it has to stay that way! It’s okay to branch out for guidance. In fact, it’s encouraged. Some of you may have gone to the opposite end of the spectrum and called someone in to clean up your mess every time you wanted to learn something new. This is dangerous, ineffective, and it doesn’t take into account the nuances of your business. Developing as a leader isn’t so much about learning a few new tasks as it is about growing as a human and developing new ways of thinking. You, as the CEO and founder, are spending way too much time on learning and implementing tasks, and neglecting the thought leadership that is absolutely crucial to the growth, profitability, and sustainability of your company. You need to recognize which aspects aren’t your job anymore and start focusing on your vital role as Thought Leader.
One-on-One vs Group Coaching
Attuned CEOs are aware that working with one person consistently (who isn’t their therapist) provides a really siloed perspective and can ultimately lead to problems in their business. There are countless benefits to being part of a group coaching program. To begin with, you can learn things in a group that you could never learn individually from the group leader, just by being in the room. Staying in your feedback tunnel is far from useful, and when you participate in a group coaching experience, you’ll find that someone will ask a question you’ve not thought of, or that you can hack something someone’s implemented in a completely different industry that works for you! The magic of the group setting is that you probably wouldn’t have gotten the idea anywhere else and, as your business grows, you simply cannot dump your troubles on your team. They need to feel safe, and you need a space outside of their purview to grow and learn, then bring that back home to the company.
How To Stand Out and Get the Most Out of Your Group Coaching Experience
Common apprehensions about group coaching programs are around not getting enough individual attention, not getting your questions answered, or getting lost in the noise. But never fear, we’re going to fill you in on some best practices to ensure that you get what you need! Firstly, before investing in a program, you need to ensure that it’s the right one for you. The business model can be agnostic, but you need to gauge whether you align with the business’ morals and values, and the way they do business. Once you’re there, you need to ensure you’re asking the right questions in a clear, succinct way to allow for a quick, clear answer. To do so, you need to be prepared to ask yourself some reflection questions beforehand, to ascertain what your question really is so you can get the most beneficial feedback. Don’t be afraid to participate! If you can consistently provide value, you’ll consistently receive value.
The #1 Thing You Need To Do As Soon as You Decide To Invest in Any Coaching Program
Once you decide to invest, you have to block your calendar and commit to actually attending, spending time in the community, asking questions, and implementing what you’ve learned. If you don’t, you won’t see results! You don’t have to attend every session, or breeze through everything, but you do need to dedicate consistent time to digest, implement, and seek feedback. High-quality programs provide so much information that you rarely need to consume all of it to get the value you need. Worry less about which offered aspects you don’t need, and worry more about whether you’re going to get a return on your investment for any of it.
