How to Be More Creative (It's Not How You Think!)

Creativity is generally associated with art, yet it encompasses so much more than that! Because of the narrow definition of creativity, the majority of adults feel out of touch with their creativity or devoid of it altogether! Studies show that it’s in our DNA to be creative. Yet, as we get older and are influenced by society’s limitations of what constitutes creativity, we fail to flex our creative muscle in a way that resonates with us as individuals. All of us are intrinsically creative, whether we’re artistic or not, and in this episode, we break down what creativity means to us and share tips for getting in touch with your creativity and helping others to do the same.

What Creativity Means To Us

Creativity is boundless and manifests itself differently for different people. If someone is more logical or mathematical-minded, their version of creativity may be thinking outside of the box and coming up with creative solutions. It’s often assumed that creativity is something separate from your day-to-day life; like a hobby. But we believe creativity can and should show up every day in your life. Creativity is hard to define and, as a society, we tend to conflate creativity with art, causing many adults to believe they’re inherently not creative. We argue that the factors that make a person creative, irrespective of their artistic ability, are originality, imagination, elaboration, flexibility, and complexity. As a society, we need to stop pitching left brain against right brain, and instead celebrate the creativity associated with both. For the sake of your brain health and society as a whole, we encourage everyone to flex their creative muscle.

How To Flex The Creative Muscle

Spending just 10 minutes a day intentionally flexing your creative muscle can strengthen your creative skill set. Traditional ideas include journaling, creating a playlist, or our favorite, creating a genie room. To flex your imagination and create a genie room, imagine that a genie visits you and grants you a wish in the form of a 20x20ft extension to your home. You have an unlimited budget and can do anything with this room. What do you do with it? What does it look/smell/sound/feel like? Set a timer for 10 minutes and let your brain play. Other helpful practices are cognitive therapy exercises or games and, believe it or not, you can benefit from playing video games, too!

How To Help Others Connect With Their Creativity

The majority of our listeners most likely identify as creative people, but what can you do if you have a spouse or parent who isn’t in touch with their creativity? As human beings who identify as creative, it’s our duty to help those around us return to their creativity, whatever that means to them. It’s important to help others identify their creative strengths and give them the time, space, and support to pursue those things.
