Don’t Feel Icky About Pre-Sales

Some people feel uncomfortable about the thought of running a pre-sale for their digital products or courses. But guess what? If you’re a service provider, you’re already using a form of pre-sales in your business. Many of us tell our clients what we’ll do for them first, collect payment next, and only then complete the work. That’s exactly what a pre-sale is, and it’s an incredibly valuable tool for your business.

A Win-Win for You and Your Customers

During your pre-sale, you’re simply selling your digital product or course before you actually create it. You announce your offer to the world, explain what you’re going to build and ask them to buy into it before you get started making it. With digital products and services, using pre-sales allows you to validate your offer in the marketplace. This ensures that you’re creating something people want and are willing to pay for. It also allows you to shape your product based on early customer insights and questions, which makes your finished product even better.

But it’s not all about you. This is a true win for your pre-sale customers, too. Your early customers usually get the best deal on the price of your product. Although they may not immediately see the most polished version of your product, they will likely have a high-touch experience that might not be available once your product is finalized.

Start With a Simple Strategy

The simplest way to start is with a low-priced digital product or a mini course. It’s an easy way to dip your toe into the pre-sales strategy without the pressure of sales objections and a high price point. In your marketing efforts, you just need to be transparent about the fact that you’re still building it– you’re in the beta phase. It’s also a good idea to communicate that your special beta pricing will be going away at the end of your pre-sale period.

How to Plan Your Pricing

There’s a psychology to pricing and how it affects buyer behavior. If you want the best results with the least friction, create an offer that people won’t second guess. If you choose a sales price of under $20, that’s usually a no-brainer purchase for your customer, as long as you’ve clearly communicated the value. Pricing under $50 and $100 both have a similar psychological impact. At prices above $100, the scale gets wider. If you want your product’s price to feel like a deal, try choosing an odd number.

Create Something That’s Easy to Implement

We want our customers to find success with the products we offer them. Sometimes, people are hesitant to buy a digital product or course if they think it will take them too much time or effort to work with it. That’s why I recommend doing everything in your power to make it as simple, easy, and frictionless as possible for them to actually do it themselves. Make it a no-brainer, decision for them! Try to get as close as possible to doing the work for them as you can. But don’t stall and stumble over coming up with the perfect idea! Instead, I highly suggest that you move forward with an idea that resonates with you and that you feel really good about putting out into the world.
