There's Never a "Good" Time to Make Radical Changes: Here's What to Do About It

Episode 626: Show Notes

There’s never a good time to make radical changes and you can always find a reason not to do something. But we’ve learned from experience that there is so much to be gained from pursuing opportunities, even under adverse circumstances. One of the things that inhibit us from pursuing growth and opportunities is the feeling that we wouldn’t be able to cope with these new changes in a healthy and sustainable way. We often feel this because we compare ourselves to others. But the truth is that you can never know the full story of someone’s success. You have no idea what’s going on behind the scenes or how their life really looks.

One of the biggest things we’ve learned from building our business is the importance of a supportive team and designing a business that is flexible enough to accommodate you during the different seasons of your life. We discuss some of the difficult circumstances we’ve been in while building our business and how it motivated us to build a business that could adapt to our needs. We also share our advice and insights on how to change your mindset and start pursuing radical change. So make sure you tune in to hear how we’ve adapted to our circumstances and how we’re helping others do the same!

We Just Had This Incredible Virtual Conference

For those of you who aren't aware, we just had this incredible virtual conference over at Boss Project. We have also invited a new cohort of people to join us inside the incubator and we’re so excited for the 2022 Spring cohort! Today’s episode is for everyone, whether you’re part of the crew, or in the consideration phase, we want to talk to you!

Big Decisions and Living in the Present Moment

Today’s episode is for anyone who has hesitated to make big decisions in their life. We want you to know that we have been there and we know how tough it is. But we also have very strong feelings around timing and would love to share what we’ve learned from making big decisions at particular points of our lives and careers. It’s very common for entrepreneurs, small business owners, and service providers to be very future-oriented and to get into a mode of being forward-thinking at all times, even when it’s the daily operations that really need attention. When we’re constantly concerned with the past or the future then we never fully appreciate the present. It’s important to celebrate how far you’ve come!

Our Top Excuses for Not Pursuing What We Want

There will always be an excuse for not pursuing what you want! Whether it’s in life or business it never really feels like the right time to be adding extra concerns onto your plate. It’s easy to look at the seemingly perfect facade of someone else’s life or business and not comprehend the stress and frenzy going on behind the scenes. This can stop a lot of people from pursuing what they want because they assume that they could never achieve the same amount of things that other people are doing in a single day in a way that is healthy and sustainable.

Our Perceptions of People As Being Superhuman

We all come from different circumstances, and it’s important to acknowledge how your situation might be limiting you in certain ways. It’s also important to take your privilege into account, especially if you are able-bodied. If you have a disability or chronic condition, it’s going to mean that you have to operate differently. There has also been an increased awareness of some of the mental health issues that can affect small business owners, particularly for women, like ADD, ADHD, anxiety, and imposter syndrome. This awareness building has had a really positive impact overall!

Working Within Your Circumstances

We’ve often seen people let their circumstances control their reality to the point where they feel faced with no other choice than to either suffer or trudge through it. The problem with this is that it stops people from visualizing how they can create opportunities for growth and prosperity. We realize that life is never going to stop, it's going to keep throwing wildcards at you, but one of the best ways to create room for growth is by building a routine and a business that allows for flexibility.

We have seen this in our own business which has gone through every phase and size imaginable. And because we’ve built a business that allows for flexibility, we feel confident that we can adapt to whatever life throws at us. You can build a business that is successful thanks to the support mechanisms you’ve put into place that can help you have the healthy space that you need in order to prosper. So that when you need a bit of a break you have the flexibility to recuperate or address what’s going on in your life. This is also why we’re so grateful for the incredible team we’ve built. Ultimately it comes down to the question of how we look at the opportunities out there and get excited about building something that supports us for who we are in the season that we’re in, instead of using our circumstances as excuses to not start or to not move forward.

The Slime Analogy That Will Help You Look at Your Business in a New Way

For anyone who has kids, you’re probably aware of the slime craze. It’s a goopy substance that is a delight for children and is the enemy of a clean home. But it can teach us an important lesson about business. You can think of your business as that slime in your hand. It transforms easily and adapts to the shape of your hand, and when you move your fingers, it moves too. That’s the business we’re asking you to build. And it’s not a permanent thing either,

If you want to build a business that has flexibility and is focused on life first and allows you to prioritize the things that you want and need in your life, then you're going to have to build a business that allows you to continue to grow despite your circumstances. Your circumstances can often give you a renewed perspective on what isn't working for you in that season. And instead of using that to give up, think about how you can make reasonable accommodations for these things that allow you the space to be a healthy whole human.

Quote This

What I get frustrated with is, I've watched so many people just let their circumstances control their reality to the point that they feel faced with no other choice than to either suffer or trudge through it, and not really paint an opportunity for growth and prosperity.
