Getting Visible – Part 1: The Required Mindset
Episode 792: Show Notes
One of the biggest things that contributes to your success is your visibility. Does your ideal audience know who you are, what you offer, and how you can uniquely solve their problem? If not, they are likely to choose someone with more visibility who provides a similar service. I recently had a coaching call with a client who is easily one of the most dynamic people I know. In this call, she told me that gaining visibility feels intimidating and asked me for some strategies to help her get past the discomfort of putting herself out there.
Honestly, I was shocked that this was even an issue for her! If getting visible feels uncomfortable for someone who is already so engaging and confident, I realized that it must also be a concern for many of you listening. That’s why, in today’s episode, I’m taking a deep dive into getting visible, specifically how you can cultivate a mindset that will get you in front of more of your ideal clients and, ultimately, drive more buyers to your offer.
Feeling Good About Getting Visible
If you don’t feel good about getting visible, then you’re definitely not going to do the work to get visible! Being visible means being vulnerable. Being visible makes you susceptible to the judgment and opinions of others. Even if you’re aligned with the belief that other people’s opinions don’t matter, we’re still psychologically wired to care what other people think. Intentionally putting yourself out there with the goal of introducing your brand and your offering to a wider audience is an audacious thing to do. Ultimately, you have no idea how people are going to respond until you do it, try it, test it, and try again. As scary as it may seem, letting people know who you are and that you’re an expert in what you do is a requirement for growing your business. You can’t hold yourself (or your business) back for fear of judgment!
Having the Audacity to Let Go of Limiting Beliefs
Just like the rest of you, I’ve had my own hesitations about getting in front of more people. My fear of cancel culture, for example, has caused me to limit myself in the past. I’m also a natural catastrophizer, which means that I tend to start with the worst-case scenario and work backward from there. Whenever I get stuck in these “end-of-days” fears, there is something that pulls me back time and time again, and I have my mom to thank. From a very young age, she gave me the audacity to believe that I could do and be anything I wanted. When it comes to my career, pursuing my dreams, fulfilling my desires, and gaining more visibility, I no longer put up walls. I am all in! I recognize the importance of the plans and strategies that I have put in motion over time and I want to see those continue to fuel my future. There are no half-measures.
Why You’ll Never Know if You Don’t Ask
My audacity has put me in some pretty unique situations. It wasn’t uncommon early in my career for me to end up on a call with the CEO of a tech startup, telling them exactly what I wanted and needed and why I was their ideal client. I would then see the needs of my business being prioritized in the production of their build-out on their dime! Often, they would also pay me to promote their product. None of this would’ve been possible if I wasn’t bold enough to ask.
Sometimes, your ideas will seem crazy. You might question if you should put them out there. When you have those thoughts, I want you to ask yourself: why not? What if? What if they say yes? What if this sets you up for long-term success? Regardless of your visibility strategy or the trajectory you’re on in your business, just being willing to ask is super powerful. The worst thing that can happen is a no. Most of the time, if you do something to increase your visibility and it doesn’t work out, the net result is neutral. You might not move forward, but you also won’t move backward. More often than not, there is no harm in trying whatever it is that you want to try.
The Two Visibility Camps
There are two camps when it comes to visibility: the manifestors and the grinders. Manifestors are guided by intuition and the laws of attraction. This isn’t necessarily woo-woo. It can also be incredibly strategic. If you tell yourself anything enough times, you will start to believe it, which then gives you the audacity to do the work. Grinders on the other hand seem to be able to work tirelessly toward their goals. They believe that the harder you hustle, the greater the reward will be at the end of the day. Aside from the burnout that can come from burning the candle at both ends, I don’t think either camp is totally wrong.
That’s one of the most beautiful things about business: there is no “right” way! There isn’t a right way to be visible, there isn’t one business model that’s the most profitable, and there isn’t a singular approach that will make or break you. It’s simply about finding the right combination of marketing and visibility strategies that align you with the audience that aligns with your offer so that you can solve their problem (and charge for it). I’ve dedicated myself to developing tools and resources to help you identify the formula that works best for you, but there are so many ways to go about it. At the end of the day, it’s about running it through your value filter and determining whether or not a particular strategy aligns with the way you want to show up.
The Mindset Required to Move Forward
There are two things that are required from a mindset perspective before you move forward with any strategy. One, you have to have the self-confidence that you can figure it out. Remember what my mom told me growing up: you can do and be anything you want! Two, you have to believe that what you want is possible. Your business can fuel the lifestyle that you want. It can support and provide for you and it can grow, even during economic recessions.
If you don’t believe this, you either need to reconsider your goal and find something more realistic to anchor into or work on your belief system. If you don’t have the self-confidence that you’ll figure it out and you don’t believe that it’s possible, do you really think you’re going to get visible? Do you think you’ll be able to do what is necessary to move your business forward? If you don’t address your mindset, it is going to hold you back. I’m not saying there won’t be bad days or that you won’t have doubts and fears, but if you can consistently believe in yourself and pour into your business, anything is possible.
Finding the Strategy that Works for YOU!
When it comes to driving leads, there are active and passive ways to go about it. I dig into eight of these strategies in my recent Organic Workshop, but for now, I’d like to highlight the benefits of producing content. Without a doubt, the fastest way to generate leads is to have someone else do it for you. The next best thing is content.
There are long-term and short-term strategies for producing content. Blogging is the most long-term, YouTube falls somewhere in the middle, while TikTok, Instagram, and LinkedIn yield the quickest results. Part of it comes down to the nature of the content itself. When you create content for your blog or YouTube, you tend to optimize for search. For TikTok and other short-form video channels, relevance is key. Regardless of where you choose to focus your energy, it’s important to invest in the channels and the strategies that have already gotten you traction.
Ultimately, you have to find what works for you and make it a priority. You need to know and understand that visibility is part of doing business. Just like I don’t think there’s a right or wrong way to build a business, I don’t think there’s a right or wrong way to get visible.
