Why You Shouldn't Overlook Your Email Signature

We preach a lot about consistent branding and how that’s important to your audience and to the client experience. However, it’s often thought that we mean the “big” places, like across your social media accounts or public-facing materials (think freebies and client documents). Yeah, consistent branding on these things is super crucial, but there are also smaller spots that are often overlooked.

Take your email signature for example. That one small piece of your business can upgrade your presence with almost no time at all. Depending on how many people you’re emailing and how often, your signature can come into contact with tons, if not hundreds, of people per day!

So why can it have such a big impact on your business, and how can you make it stand out?

Not Too Long, Not Too Short

A big mistake we see is having a signature that’s a million words long! You definitely don’t have to include your complete bio in your signature. All you really need is your name, business name, website and social channel links, office hours, and maybe a link to a freebie if you have one. You can include your phone number if you’re comfortable with that or it’s essential to your business. If you’re a brick and mortar business, you should include your address as well.

Pick the Right Picture

A nice, clear, friendly headshot is usually the way to go. If it’s a circle crop (which email signatures usually are), you don’t want your head to take up the whole space, but you don’t want to be so far away that people can barely see your face either. If you have a photo smiling, that would be amazing to use because you want to come off as friendly and approachable. However, use whatever photos are on brand for you! If your whole thing is putting off a certain look, definitely go with whatever portrays that. We’re just giving a general rule of thumb to follow.

Brand It Up

Be sure that you’re using your brand colors and fonts (or similar fonts) in your signature! This gives that added flair and brand consistency that we were talking about earlier. Branding your email signature helps you stand out. Even if it’s in a seemingly small way, it does make a difference!
